Gum tissues and bones should be well- fitted around the teeth, however when periodontal disease attacks gum tissues and bones that supports the teeth are destroyed and pockets forms around the teeth. The pockets becomes more deeper, allowing bacteria to live. Bacteria may accumulate around the teeth and can spread to the gum tissue. Bone and tissue loss are the results if bacteria are accumulate in the deep pockets that were formed. Loss of bones and tissues can lead to eventual loss of tooth.

If pockets are starting to form around the teeth it should be reported to the dentist at an early stage. Periodontal surgery will be required to reduce the pockets, pocket reduction surgery will be the periodontal surgery that will be done. The procedure is important in eliminating the existing bacteria to prevent oral destruction caused by allowing the condition to occur. Deeper pockets are more difficult for you and your dental care professional to clean, and it is important to reduce them. Oral hygiene and reduced pockets and professional dental cleaning increases the chances of having a healthy and beautiful teeth.

It is been inculcated in our minds that maintaining a good oral health keeps gum disease away. Regular brushing and flossing are the effective ways of keeping bacteria away. Bacteria are the premier cause of gum infection. Gum inflammation can be experienced as a reaction to gum infection and gums becomes red in color, tender and puffy.

Brushing and flossing will prevent your mouth being the haven of harmful bacteria, however it is not enough to be protected from gum infection. There are several factors why gum infection occurs. Brushing and flossing won't remove all the bacteria that is present in the mouth, professional cleaning are needed to remove food particles left in the mouth especially in the hard to reach areas, thus making dental visits twice a year is important.
